Oil bottles; how best to store them?

Watch out for oxidation

The use of glass oil bottles is very important, but to understand why it is necessary to dwell on the need to store this valuable product well. The storage of oil must be done in such a way that its characteristics are not altered, and that is, it must stay away from sources of: light, air, odors and high, or too low, temperatures. Glass is the best friend of oil storage, as long as it is dark. On the market, however, aluminum tin is also widely used, but in these cases the oil must be decanted, then, always into glass containers. Let’s see how and why!

The pouring

When someone buys oil in tin, they already know that they have to perform another step and that is: decant it, to keep it at its best. It is a ‘very simple operation that consists of filling glass bottles with the help of a funnel. It goes without saying that the bottles must be new and well washed and cleaned. Absolutely ruled out reusing bottles that contained anything else previously such as wine, vinegar or other types of liquid. The cork must also be new, of course. If you will be using an oil cruet right away, to keep in the kitchen, then you can use a measuring cap to avoid waste!

Does the oil have an expiration date?

Olive oil does not expire! A date is generally written on the product, which is nothing more than an indication given by the producer to inform the consumer until what date, if properly stored, the olive oil will remain intact. It tends to be the case that oil can be stored for up to 18 months (again depending on the quality of the oil).
After this period, the flavors of extra virgin olive oil diminish and one can no longer benefit from the power of its aromas and smells. That said, the product still remains safe for health and can be legally sold and consumed.
